How to set up Wi-Fi on the Nokia N900

Setting up Wi-Fi on the Nokia N900 for high speed online access using home Wi-Fi networks, office WLANs and public Wi-Fi hotspots

Running on the Maemo smartphone operating system, Nokia's N900 is a powerfully featured touchscreen device with loads of applications, plenty of functionality and great connectivity options - including HSPA and Wi-Fi.

Very different to Nokia's regular Symbian S60 smartphone user interface, the N900 may take a little getting used to for Nokia Nseries loyalists, but ultimately it has slicker set up and delivers a terrifically versatile performance.

As well as a very usable browser and support for online services and applications, the N900 features HSPA high-speed mobile connectivity (with download speeds of up to 10.2Mbps and upload speeds of 2Mbps) plus WLAN 802.11 b/g for connection to home Wi-Fi hubs, office WLANs or public Wi-Fi hotspots.

Setting up the Nokia N900 to use Wi-Fi is very straightforward. Here's how...

Setting up Wi-Fi

  1. On the homescreen, press the Status Area towards the top left of the display. This is the panel that shows the date and battery and cellular signal strength icons.
  2. A Status panel appears. Press the Internet Connection box.
  3. The N900 searches for available internet connection access points. Your mobile network is displayed alongside a list of in-range W-Fi networks detected by the N900.
  4. Scroll down the list until you see the Wi-Fi network to which you wish to connect. Press to connect.
  5. If the Wi-Fi network is security protected, you will be prompted to input a pre-shared key. If it is your home Wi-Fi network, this will be the passcode set by you or the person who set up the access security. If you are using an office or public WLAN, you will need to get the passcode from the network administrator or service provider.
  6. Once you've typed in the pre-shared key, press Done. You will be connected to the Wi-Fi network. Whenever you are within range of the Wi-Fi network you have registered on, your Nokia N900 will be recognised by the network and you can acces it without having to enter a pre-shared key.
  7. You can now use the N900's browser or any of its online applications and be connected via Wi-Fi.

Finding the N900's WLAN MAC address

If you're connecting to a Wi-Fi network that requires pre-authorisation before connection (even with the correct pre-shared key), you may require the phone's WLAN MAC address. This is a 12-character address that the administrator of the network may need to pre-authorise your phone to connect. It may be automatically detected when you try to sign onto the network.

  • To get the N900's MAC address, on the homescreen press the Application Menu button in the top left hand corner (it's the one illustrated with six squares).
  • In the main Menu, press Settings.
  • In the Settings menu, scroll all the way down the screen. Press About Product.
  • Details about the device appear. On this you'll find your Nokia N900's WLAN MAC address - a 12-charcacter code. Input this into the appropriate place in the Wi-Fi router access set up procedure.
